Hawksbill Crag

The crown jewel of the Whitaker Point Trail is undoubtedly Hawksbill Crag. Jutting out from the cliffside, this iconic rock formation resembles the beak of a hawk, offering panoramic views of the valley below. The crag is a perfect spot for photographs to share with friends, picnics, or simply soaking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the surrounding wilderness. On a clear day, you can see for miles, with the rolling hills and dense forests stretching out as far as the eye can see.

Trail is well-marked!!

Tips for a Successful Hike

  • Start Early: To avoid the crowds and experience the trail in the soft light of morning, start your hike early. This also gives you ample time to explore and enjoy the crag without feeling rushed.  Timing up a sunrise on the crag, will offer the most stunning scenery and pictures.
  • Bring Water and Food: While the hike is fairly short, it's essential to stay hydrated and energized. Pack enough water and some food (there aren't any shops or restaurants in the area) to keep you going or reward yourself afterwards.
  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: The trail can be rocky and uneven in places. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good traction are recommended.
  • Check the Weather: Weather in the Ozarks can be unpredictable. Check the forecast before you go and be prepared for changing conditions.
  • Leave No Trace: Respect the natural environment by carrying out all trash and minimizing your impact on the trail. Let's keep this beautiful place pristine for future generations.
  • Watch out for Poison Ivy:  We saw some along the way.  Just wear protective clothing and be vigilant.  Stay on the path!!

Getting there

The trailhead is about a 90-minute drive south of Branson, MO and a 2-hour drive southeast of Bentonville, AR in the heart of the beautiful Ozark Mountains, and is in a pretty remote area. It's a great day-trip from Branson if you're looking for something different.  The parking lot at the trailhead offers ample capacity.  It's important to be aware that the last seven miles are on a gravel road (County Road 5) with some steep sections.  The road some deep ruts and is very bumpy the entire seven miles.  A vehicle with higher clearance is the best way to do it, but we saw some low-clearance sedans do ok, too. We took it very slowly and completed this section in about 30-40 minutes.

Here's a view of the sign to the seven mile gravel road.
